EMPLOYEE USE OF TOBACCO

 

 

The Bossier Parish School Board shall prohibit smoking or any other use of tobacco products and illegal substances by faculty, staff, employees, or members of the general public in all buildings, centers, offices, school buses, vehicles, schools or other property owned by or under the jurisdiction of the School Board.

 

The use of any tobacco product, smokeless tobacco, or any smoking object/device, including but not limited to electronic cigarettes, advanced personal vaporizers, vape pens, vape mods and similar devices, shall be prohibited on and in all School Board property and vehicles, and at all school-sponsored or school-approved functions.  However, this prohibition shall not be applicable to any tobacco product approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for sale as a tobacco cessation product and which is marketed and sold solely for such purpose.  School Board property shall include any elementary or secondary school grounds or buildings, any portable buildings, field houses, stadiums, equipment storage areas, vacant land, or any other property owned, operated, or leased by the School Board.

 

Violators shall be subject to the following disciplinary measures:

 

  1. First Offense:  A letter of reprimand from the employee’s immediate supervisor shall be placed in the employee’s file at the local unit of administration.  The letter of reprimand shall be removed at the end of one year provided no further violations have occurred.

  2. Second Offense:  A letter of reprimand from the Assistant Superintendent shall be placed in the employee’s file at the local unit of administration.  This letter of reprimand shall be removed at the end of one year provided no further violations have occurred.

  3. Third Offense:  A letter of reprimand from the Superintendent shall be placed in the employee’s file at the local unit of administration.  The letter of reprimand from the Superintendent shall be removed at the end of one year provided no further violations have occurred.

  4. Fourth Offense:  The Superintendent shall take whatever administrative action he/she deems appropriate.

  5. In addition to the above disciplinary actions, the employee shall be referred to the school’s health provider for tobacco intervention.  The school’s health provider shall have the option of referring the employee to a no-fee tobacco cessation program.
